Terms of Use
Last updated: [date]
DRAFT – not for publication. These terms must be reviewed and approved by a qualified lawyer before they are published.
About these terms
These terms apply to your use of the Civic Engagement Academy website and programme ("the Academy"). The Academy is run by the Evidence and Methods Lab (EML), Plot 13 Kenneth Dale Lane, Kamwokya, Kampala, Uganda ("we", "us").
By using the website, applying, or taking part in the programme, you agree to these terms, our Privacy Notice and, if you are a Fellow, our Code of Conduct. If you do not agree, please do not use the Academy.
The programme
The Academy is a free online leadership programme for senior professionals. Cohort 1 runs from 5 October to 18 December 2026 and includes 15 live online sessions for up to 25 Fellows. There is no fee to apply or take part.
Eligibility
To apply you must:
- be at least 18 years old
- be a senior professional meeting the criteria published on the website [confirm selection criteria]
- give accurate, complete and honest information in your application
Places are limited. We select Fellows at our discretion and do not have to give reasons for decisions, although we will try to give feedback where we can.
Accounts and login
- We use one-time-code sign-in: we email you a one-time code each time you sign in.
- Keep access to your email account secure. Do not share login codes or let anyone else use your account.
- Tell us promptly at hello@evidenceandmethodslab.org if you think someone else has accessed your account.
- We may suspend or close an account that is misused or that breaches these terms.
Acceptable use
When using the website and taking part in sessions, you must not:
- break any law, or infringe anyone's rights, including privacy and intellectual property rights
- share session links, materials or recordings with anyone outside your cohort
- record, screenshot or otherwise capture sessions yourself
- upload or post anything unlawful, abusive, defamatory or misleading
- impersonate anyone or misrepresent your role or organisation
- try to gain unauthorised access to the website or other users' accounts, or disrupt the website (for example with malware, scraping or automated requests)
- use the cohort directory or contact details of other Fellows for marketing or unsolicited messages
Programme changes and cancellation
We will do our best to run the programme as advertised. However, we may need to:
- change session dates, times, facilitators, content or platforms
- move, merge or cancel sessions
- postpone or cancel the programme, for example for reasons beyond our control
We will tell you as early as we reasonably can. Because the programme is free, we are not responsible for any costs or losses you incur as a result of changes or cancellation.
You may withdraw at any time by emailing us. Please let us know early so we can offer your place to someone else where possible.
Recordings and materials
Recordings
Live sessions are recorded and shared only with your cohort and the programme team. Details of how we handle recordings are in our Privacy Notice.
Your licence to use materials
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and use programme materials and recordings for your own personal and professional development, including applying what you learn in your work.
You must not:
- redistribute, publish, sell or share materials or recordings outside your cohort
- upload them to other websites, platforms or shared drives
- use them to run your own training or courses without our written permission
Your access to recordings and your dashboard may end [access period – confirm] after the cohort finishes.
Intellectual property
The website, programme materials, branding and recordings are owned by EML, KAS, our facilitators or our licensors, and are protected by intellectual property law. Nothing in these terms transfers ownership to you.
You keep ownership of anything you contribute (such as comments or presentations). You give us permission to use your contributions within the programme for your cohort. We will ask separately before using your contributions for any other purpose.
Certificates
Fellows who attend at least 85% of live sessions receive a Certificate of Attendance, co-issued by EML and KAS.
- The certificate is a record of participation. It is not an academic qualification, degree, credit-bearing award or professional licence.
- We decide whether attendance requirements have been met, based on our attendance records.
- We may refuse or revoke a certificate if it was obtained dishonestly (for example, through false application information or misrepresented attendance) or following a serious breach of the Code of Conduct.
- We may keep a record of certificates issued so that we can verify them on request.
Third-party services
The Academy uses third-party services, such as video-conferencing and email providers. Their own terms and privacy policies may also apply. We are not responsible for third-party websites linked from the Academy.
Liability
The Academy is provided free of charge and "as is". To the extent the law allows:
- we do not guarantee that the website or sessions will always be available, uninterrupted or error-free
- programme content is for learning purposes and is not legal, financial or other professional advice
- we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of profit, income, data or opportunity
- our total liability to you in connection with the Academy is limited to [liability cap – confirm, e.g. UGX amount]
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under Ugandan law, such as liability for fraud.
Ending your access
We may suspend or end your participation or access if you breach these terms or the Code of Conduct, or if we reasonably need to protect other Fellows or the Academy. Sections on intellectual property, certificates and liability continue to apply after your access ends.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We will post the new version here with a new "Last updated" date and tell enrolled Fellows about significant changes by email.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Uganda. Any dispute will be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of Uganda. We encourage you to contact us first so we can try to resolve any concern informally.
